Mini Review: Roseblood by A. G. Howard *SPOILERS*

This YA novel from New York Times bestselling author A. G. Howard marks the beginning of a new era for fans of the Splintered series. Rune Germain moves to a boarding school outside of Paris, only to discover that at this opera-house-turned-music-conservatory, phantoms really do exist. RoseBlood is a Phantom of the Opera–inspired retelling in which Rune’s biggest talent—her voice—is also her biggest curse. Fans of Daughter of Smoke and Bone and the Splintered series will find themselves captivated by this pulse-pounding spin on a classic tale.

Rune, whose voice has been compared to that of an angel, has a mysterious affliction linked to her talent that leaves her sick and drained at the end of every performance. Convinced creative direction will cure her, her mother ships her off to a French boarding school for the arts, rumored to have a haunted past.

Shortly after arriving at RoseBlood conservatory, Rune starts to believe something otherworldly is indeed afoot. The mystery boy she’s seen frequenting the graveyard beside the opera house doesn’t have any classes at the school, and vanishes almost as quickly as he appears. When Rune begins to develop a secret friendship with the elusive Thorn, who dresses in clothing straight out of the 19th century, she realizes that in his presence she feels cured. Thorn may be falling for Rune, but the phantom haunting RoseBlood wants her for a very specific and dangerous purpose. As their love continues to grow, Thorn is faced with an impossible choice: lead Rune to her destruction, or save her and face the wrath of the phantom, the only father he’s ever known.

A. G. Howard brings the romantic storytelling that Splintered fans adore to France—and an entirely new world filled with lavish romance and intrigue—in a retelling inspired by a story that has captivated generations. Fans of both the Phantom of the Opera musical and novel, as well as YA retellings such as Marissa Meyer’s Cinder, will devour RoseBlood.

I did enjoy this book. It was good, solid 4/5 ⭐️ It definitely had a good Phantom of the Opera feel to it.

Turn away now if you do not want spoilers!!

Alright so the one thing that bothered me about this book was the confusing lore for the ‘vampires’ in this novel. Honestly, they were more like incubi and succubi than vampires. That’s honestly why I bumped it from 5 stars.

Mini Review: The Wicker King by K. Ancrum

The Wicker King is a psychological young adult thriller that follows two friends struggling as one spirals into madness.

Jack once saved August’s life…now can August save him?

August is a misfit with a pyro streak and Jack is a golden boy on the varsity rugby team―but their intense friendship goes way back. Jack begins to see increasingly vivid hallucinations that take the form of an elaborate fantasy kingdom creeping into the edges of the real world. With their parents’ unreliable behavior, August decides to help Jack the way he always has―on his own. He accepts the visions as reality, even when Jack leads them on a quest to fulfill a dark prophecy.

August and Jack alienate everyone around them as they struggle with their sanity, free falling into the surreal fantasy world that feels made for them. In the end, each one must choose his own truth.

Written in vivid micro-fiction with a stream-of-consciousness feel and multimedia elements, K. Ancrum’s The Wicker King touches on themes of mental health and explores a codependent relationship fraught with tension, madness and love.

I found this to be a gut wrenching and tragic read honestly. That ending… Absolutely wrecked me!! 😭😭 However, the relationship between August and Jack is truly beautiful.

5/5 ⭐️

Heart of Iron by Ashley Poston Review *SPOILERS*

I had the pleasure of getting this in an Owlcrate box a few months back. Finally I got to read it! There will be a spoiler section towards the end that will be clearly marked!

An action-packed tale full of romance, royalty, and adventure, inspired by the story of Anastasia. Perfect for fans of Six of Crows, Cinder, and the cult classic television show Firefly.

Seventeen-year-old Ana is a scoundrel by nurture and an outlaw by nature. Found as a child drifting through space with a sentient android called D09, Ana was saved by a fearsome space captain and the grizzled crew she now calls family. But D09—one of the last remaining illegal Metals—has been glitching, and Ana will stop at nothing to find a way to fix him.

Ana’s desperate effort to save D09 leads her on a quest to steal the coordinates to a lost ship that could offer all the answers. But at the last moment, a spoiled Ironblood boy beats Ana to her prize. He has his own reasons for taking the coordinates, and he doesn’t care what he’ll sacrifice to keep them.

When everything goes wrong, she and the Ironblood end up as fugitives on the run. Now their entire kingdom is after them—and the coordinates—and not everyone wants them captured alive.

What they find in a lost corner of the universe will change all their lives—and unearth dangerous secrets. But when a darkness from Ana’s past returns, she must face an impossible choice: does she protect a kingdom that wants her dead or save the Metal boy she loves?

Alright I’m going to be upfront and say that for me the first 100 or so pages were dull. But I wanted to read a little more before DNFing. I’m glad I did because it definitely picked up!!

Di was by far my favorite character! He was dynamic and his part of the story was heartbreaking. I’ll launch into more on that later.

Robb and Jax were also great honestly. I love them so much!!

This is the spoiler section so ex out now if you don’t want spoilers!!

You gone? You better be.

Ok let’s get into this!!

So regarding Di’s story being tragic omg… So not only did he wipe his own memory to protect Ana but we also find out that he and the other Metals were once human. Which I literally gasped! That was unexpected and omg…

Regarding Robb and Jax… They are my new OTP not going to lie. I love them so much especially together. I had NO IDEA this book had LGBTQIA+ rep but wow!!

All in all this was a solid 4/5 ⭐️

Review Friday: The Tiny Spark Company

I ordered these two candles from The Tiny Spark Co a while back and wanted to write up this post reviewing them!

First off I’ve been following this company for a while and have now placed two orders with them. This was my first order for their Hades and Persephone candles!

The labels for these candles are really stunning and capture the essence of this timeless OTP!

I was really excited when they released the Persephone candle and doubly had to have it when they released Hades.

Persephone’s candle smells like Pomegranates and Wine: this scent is really feminine and nostalgic! I can’t put my finger on it but it reminds me of something.

Hade’s candle smells like Apples, Amber, and Fire: THIS SCENT!!!! Is one of my absolute faves! It smells masculine but fruity, definitely like sitting by a campfire eating apple pie. I love it! It’s truly amazing.

Overall I highly recommend this shop and their candles! Since receiving these candles I’ve bought 3 more candles from them! Once those come I’ll review them also 😉

Until Next Time!

Bookstagram Background DIY

A few months back I had decided to make a custom background for my bookstagram! This was definitely a learning experience for me.

Foam poster board

Book pages

Fire (optional)

First I deconstructed an ARC that I didn’t particularly like. You can also look at books from places like your local dollar store, discarded library books, or beat up copies of your old books to use for this project.

I then went to my Dollar Store to get the foam poster board and tape.

I did originally start using glue for this project but found it bubbled, wrinkled, and just didn’t work. That’s why I switched to tape.

I layered the first part down on the board, making sure to overlap the pages so none of the board peeked through. Then I started laying out my distressed pages over that first layer!

This is where the fire came in! I burned as much of the pages as I wanted to get the desired distressed effect.

Once I switched over to tape it was so much easier to finish this project. I did do two boards so that I could take upright photos as well as floor photos.

Overall price:

All together this project cost be $4! I bought 2 boards for $1 each and 2 tape dispensers that also cost me $1 each.

It’s a fairly cheap and easy project to do!

Custom Candle Review: Novel Heartbeat Creations

I ordered a custom candle from Novel Heartbeat Creations!

I really love Stranger Things and kind of fell in love with bad boy Billy Hargrove played by Dacre Montgomery! Since I’ve been on a huge candle kick I decided to ask some of my fellow Stranger Things lovers which candle shops 1. Did customs and 2. Also liked Stranger Things!

I had gotten two responses with shops and decided to look into how to go about requesting a custom candle from each shop.

Why I decided to go with Novel Heartbeat Creations is because how you place an order for a custom was so simple! She has a special listing on her website with detailed instructions, scents she has, etc. All you have to do is build the candle yourself!

The candle arrived pretty quickly after I placed my order and how she shipped it was excellent. It was nicely packaged!

Onto what I had asked:

I wanted his name (the title of the candle) to be in script, the color to be purple, and I chose Leather, Sandalwood, and Vanilla Musk for the scent profile. The candle is absolutely beautiful and smells amazing! It has a sweet note to it but also is very manly. If you’re familiar with the Scentsy scent Quiver it smells a lot like that which is great because that’s my absolute favorite Scentsy scent 😉

The candle looks amazing on my bookshelf next to my Billy funko pop!

Thank you so much Novel Heartbeat Creations for making me this gorgeous custom candle! 💜

You can find her shop here

I based my color choice on this fanart:

Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake Review *Includes Spoilers*

Hey everyone *waves* Sorry for not posting my review for Roseblood… That’ll come eventually but here is my review for Three Dark Crowns!

Photo taken by me, check out my Instagram post for more details.

Fans of acclaimed author Kendare Blake’s Anna Dressed in Blood will devour Three Dark Crowns, a dark and inventive fantasy about three sisters who must fight to the death to become queen. And don’t miss the highly anticipated sequel, One Dark Throne!

In every generation on the island of Fennbirn, a set of triplets is born: three queens, all equal heirs to the crown and each possessor of a coveted magic. Mirabella is a fierce elemental, able to spark hungry flames or vicious storms at the snap of her fingers. Katharine is a poisoner, one who can ingest the deadliest poisons without so much as a stomachache. Arsinoe, a naturalist, is said to have the ability to bloom the reddest rose and control the fiercest of lions.

But becoming the Queen Crowned isn’t solely a matter of royal birth. Each sister has to fight for it. And it’s not just a game of win or lose…it’s life or death. The night the sisters turn sixteen, the battle begins. The last queen standing gets the crown.

Be sure to catch the stunning sequel to this New York Times bestseller, One Dark Throne.

My Review:

Fans of Throne of Glass and Furyborn will absolutely adore this book! I seriously enjoyed it, devoured it in one sitting!

This was a solid 5/5 ⭐️ read for me!

There was great distinction between which Queen was being ‘followed’ in each chapter! I really like that because too many times I’ve run into multi-pov stories that don’t make that distinction very well!

Alright so lemme just say I absolutely despise Luca with a burning passion and hope that she and Natalia off themselves 🤷🏻‍♀️

Mirabella is so far my favorite Queen! She’s powerful but also has a desire to take care of her sisters, very compassionate.

THAT ENDING THO!!!!! Holy shit OK so this is where I’m going to launch into spoilers so BACK AWAY NOW if you haven’t read this and don’t want spoilers…

You gone? Ok cool.

Arsinoe, Arsinoe, Arsinoe… WTF GIRL?! Ok so I need to get the next one quickly to figure out HOW THE HELL Arsinoe’s actual power went undetected. Does that mean that Katharine is actually a Naturalist? Or is SHE the one who’s powerless? I dunno!
