Praise for DARK SHORES

“Richly-woven, evocative, and absolutely impossible to put down―I was hooked from the first lines! Dark Shores has everything I look for in a fantasy novel: fresh, unique settings, a cast of complex and diverse characters, and an unflinching boldness with the nuanced world-building. I loved every word.” ―Sarah J. Maas, #1 New York Times bestselling author

“The book grabs readers from the beginning with its stellar worldbuilding and multidimensional characters, and the mythical elements are truly believable within the constructs of the story. The perspective shifts between the viewpoints of Teriana and Marcus from chapter to chapter, offering readers greater insights into each. …A gripping introduction to a new series.” ―Kirkus Reviews (starred)

“This is a lush, imaginative world, and as the focus shifts between Teriana and Marcus, it becomes clear that the readers are only getting a glimpse of its complicated history and mythology. …Their secrets don’t, of course, stop Teriana and Marcus from embarking on a steamy romance, and fans of Rutkoski’s sighworthy The Winner’s Kiss and the high-stakes sea adventure of Levenseller’s Daughter of the Pirate King will want to know where Marcus and Teriana journey to next.” ―Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books

High seas adventure, blackmail, and meddling gods meet in Dark Shores, the first novel in a new YA fantasy series.

In a world divided by meddlesome gods and treacherous oceans, only the Maarin possess the knowledge to cross the Endless Seas. But they have one mandate: East must never meet West.

Teriana is the second mate of the Quincense and heir to the Maarin Triumvirate. Her people are born of the seas and the keepers of its secrets, but when her closest friend is forced into an unwanted betrothal, Teriana breaks her people’s mandate so her friend might escape—a choice with devastating consequences.

Marcus is the commander of the Thirty-Seventh, the notorious legion that has led the Celendor Empire to conquer the entire East. The legion is his family, but even they don’t know the truth he’s been hiding since childhood. It’s a secret he’ll do anything to protect, no matter how much it costs him – and the world.

When an Empire senator discovers the existence of the Dark Shores, he captures Teriana’s crew and threatens to reveal Marcus’s secret unless they sail in pursuit of conquest, forcing the two into an unlikely—and unwilling—alliance. They unite for the sake of their families, but both must decide how far they are willing to go, and how much they are willing to sacrifice.

My Review:

I definitely enjoyed this book! Super engaging with great characters. I was hooked from chapter two. I really liked Marcus as a character, definitely one of my faves!! His romance with Teriana was truly beautiful! Also her name is so cool, super unique! Definitely pick this up if you love fantasy books especially with a political twist.

~Me cheering on this book and its great cast of characters~

Review: A Hunger Like No Other by Kresley Cole

In New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Kresley Cole’s sizzling series, a fierce werewolf and a bewitching vampire become unlikely soul mates whose passion will test the boundaries of life and death.

After enduring years of torture from the vampire horde, Lachlain MacRieve, leader of the Lykae Clan, is enraged to find the predestined mate he’s waited millennia for is a vampire. Or partly one. Emmaline Troy is a small, ethereal half Valkyrie/half vampire, who somehow begins to soothe the fury burning within him.

Sheltered Emmaline finally sets out to uncover the truth about her deceased parents—until a powerful Lykae claims her as his mate and forces her back to his ancestral Scottish castle. There, her fear of the Lykae—and their notorious dark desires—ebbs as he begins a slow, wicked seduction to sate her own dark cravings.

Yet when an ancient evil from her past resurfaces, will their desire deepen into a love that can bring a proud warrior to his knees and turn a gentle beauty into the fighter she was born to be?

My Review:

3/5 ⭐️

So I went into this book not knowing it had rapey elements and kidnapping… It’s supposed to be ‘romance’ but I couldn’t get passed that even if Emmaline punched back every once in a while.

Overall I get this book is from 2006 (I checked and was baffled, I thought it was older)… But I didn’t like the rapey elements. The rest of the book was pretty good and Emmaline is a really awesome female lead. Though I didn’t care much for Lachain he did grow on me towards the end.

Review: Kiss Number 8 by Colleen A. F. Venable and Illustrated by Ellen T. Crenshaw

Mads is pretty happy with her life. She goes to church with her family, and minor league baseball games with her dad. She goofs off with her best friend Cat, and has thus far managed to avoid getting kissed by Adam, the boy next door. It’s everything she hoped high school would be… until all of a sudden, it’s not.

Her dad is hiding something big―so big it could tear her family apart. And that’s just the beginning of her problems: Mads is starting to figure out that she doesn’t want to kiss Adam… because the only person she wants to kiss is Cat.

Kiss Number 8, a graphic novel from writer Colleen AF Venable and illustrator Ellen T. Crenshaw, is a layered, funny, sharp-edged story of teen sexuality and family secrets.

Before I jump into my review I wanted to post some trigger warnings for this book: Transphobia, Homophobia, Bullying, Domestic Abuse, Cheating, Heavy Religious Tones

My Review:

5/5 ⭐️

I really enjoyed this book, it was really cute. It does deal with some triggering subject matter but I enjoyed reading about it. Especially Sams story, I would have loved more of that or even a spinoff about his life. This does have both trans and bisexual rep — though Mads does not come out and say exactly what her sexuality is at the end of the book she is seen in a relationship with a female presenting person and the other people she has dated after coming out are mixed. This was a really quick read and I found it to be beautiful, please go pick this book up especially if you love diverse reads!

Review: Aurora Rising by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff

I received an E-ARC for this book via the publisher, all thoughts are my own

From the New York Times and internationally bestselling authors of the Illuminae Files comes a new science fiction epic . . .

The year is 2380, and the graduating cadets of Aurora Academy are being assigned their first missions. Star pupil Tyler Jones is ready to recruit the squad of his dreams, but his own boneheaded heroism sees him stuck with the dregs nobody else in the academy would touch . . .

A cocky diplomat with a black belt in sarcasm
A sociopath scientist with a fondness for shooting her bunkmates
A smart-ass tech whiz with the galaxy’s biggest chip on his shoulder
An alien warrior with anger-management issues
A tomboy pilot who’s totally not into him, in case you were wondering

And Ty’s squad isn’t even his biggest problem–that’d be Aurora Jie-Lin O’Malley, the girl he’s just rescued from interdimensional space. Trapped in cryo-sleep for two centuries, Auri is a girl out of time and out of her depth. But she could be the catalyst that starts a war millions of years in the making, and Tyler’s squad of losers, discipline cases, and misfits might just be the last hope for the entire galaxy.

My Review:

5/5 ⭐️

I LOVED this book. Like… AHHH I can’t even. It was filled with action, funny moments, great characters, and a little romance. Fyn is, I think, my favorite character. He’s witty and gets stuff done!

Overall I still think of this book even though I read it a while ago, it was very good. It’s out now so go pick it up!! 😉

~basically all of them through the novel~

Below are spoilers, you’ve been warned

Aurora was seriously awesome and the mystery surrounding her and her powers was just 😱 Also towards the end of the book came my favorite section when Fyn was aghast over ‘choomp murder’ 🤣 I still giggle at that. The romance between Aurora and Kal was really great, I loved the slow buildup!
