Review: The Girl King by Mimi Yu *SPOILERS*

The Girl King releases January 8th 2019!

*please note this is a scheduled post and I am currently writing this review in September when I originally read the book*

I was given this ARC copy by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Two sisters become unwitting rivals in a war to claim the title of Emperor in this richly imagined, Asian-inspired fantasy for fans of Renée Ahdieh and Sabaa Tahir.

Sisters Lu and Min have always known their places as the princesses of the Empire of the First Flame: assertive Lu will be named her father’s heir and become the dynasty’s first female ruler, while timid Min will lead a quiet life in Lu’s shadow. Until their father names their male cousin Set his heir instead, sending ripples through the realm and throwing both girls’ lives into utter chaos.

Determined to reclaim her birthright, Lu has no choice but to go on the run, leaving Min to face the volatile court alone. Lu soon crosses paths with Nokhai, the lone, unlikely survivor of the Ashina, a clan of nomadic wolf shapeshifters. Nok never learned to shift–or to trust the empire that killed his family–but working with the princess might be the only way to unlock his true power.

As Lu and Nok form a shaky alliance, Min’s own hidden power awakens, a forbidden, deadly magic that could secure Set’s reign . . . or allow her to claim the throne herself. But there can only be one emperor, and the sisters’ greatest enemy could very well turn out to be each other.

This sweeping fantasy set against a world of buried ancient magic and political intrigue weaves an unforgettable story of ambition, betrayal, and sacrifice.

My Review:

I definitely enjoyed this book, it was a 4/5 ⭐️ read for me. The characters are great, the storyline is a nice change, and the magic is interesting.

Now onto spoilers…

So… This book honestly could have been a lot shorter. It’s paced alright but the whole buildup was a little much considering the major events happened within the last few chapters of the book… Also the magic really wasn’t explained at all which bothered me. It basically just… WAS…

Overall though this was a nice read.

Review: Some Girls Bind by Rory James

I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own.

Jamie knows that she isn’t like other girls. She has a secret. She binds her chest every day to feel more like herself. Jamie questions why she is drawn to this practice and why she is afraid of telling her friends, who have their own secrets. Could she really be genderqueer?

My Review:

4/5 ⭐️ this book was formatted similar to how Ellen Hopkins books are formatted which was enjoyable. I really enjoyed Jamie’s story!! This was a really enjoyable LGBTQIA+ read. Pick this one up when it comes out February 1st! Especially if you love stories formatted like poetry.

Review: The Vampire of Maple Town by Kane McLoughlin

I requested this Read Now title on NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts are my own!

After a young boy becomes a reluctant vampire, he is forced to sign a contract to kill someone in his home of Maple Town. This is the condition behind the mysterious adoption of fifteen-year old Charlie. While under the care of the grieving widower, Vincent Prowl, Charlie can never go outside. Vincent’s only explanation is that it’s too dangerous. One day Charlie escapes and Vincent realizes he’ll do anything to save his son —even if it means the destruction of the town he once loved in exchange for he and his son’s freedom. All the while, unknownst to the fact that a young, locked away witch named Alice holds the key to preventing a tragedy and freeing Charlie from his gruesome contract and the deadline that grows closer with each day.

My Review:

I’d give this title 3/5 ⭐️ It was interesting but I didn’t like the writing style. The story has a unique premise but for me it didn’t live up to what I thought it would. The beginning was a little confusing for me, Charlie just wasn’t interesting… So yeah… 😐
