“Katie McGarry knows what YA is, how it works, and what it can do better than anyone, but she always takes it one step further.” ―Hypable

“Fair warning: Picture-perfect Scarlett and misunderstood Jesse will have you in your feels.” ―Girls’ Life Magazine

“Beyond a haunted teen romance is a beautiful, moving exploration of domestic violence, forgiveness, and self-love. …Simultaneously heartbreaking and heartwarming.” ―Kirkus, starred review

“McGarry ably captures the feeling of desperately wanting to come home to a friendship that has radically changed. The novel manages to tackle domestic violence in a way that never feels clichéd, and the romance is sure to win over even the most cynical reader. This is a story you’ll want to read slowly, just to be able to stay with the characters for a moment longer.” ―Booklist

“A gorgeous, heartfelt journey of redemption and love.” ―Wendy Higgins, New York Times bestselling author

“Powerful, emotional, and ultimately hopeful. An unforgettable story that will leave its mark on your heart.” ―C. J. Redwine, New York Times bestselling author

“Gritty and real, Only a Breath Apart is a story of hope conjured from pain, strength drawn from innocence, and love earned from self-respect. Beautiful, poignant, and fierce.” ―Kristen Simmons, critically acclaimed author of the Article 5 series

“Meticulously weaves a fragile love story through a minefield of loss, broken trust, and familial curses both real and imagined. Haunting, authentic, and ultimately hopeful.” ―Tammara Webber, New York Times bestselling author

“A painful, beautiful, and utterly magical story about the family you’re born into versus the family you choose.” ―Trish Doller, author of In a Perfect World

“A touching tale of love and fate straight from the heartland.” ―Mindy McGinnis, author of The Female of the Species

“Scarlett and Jesse’s story will stay in your heart long after you finish the book.” ―Simone Elkeles, New York Times bestselling author

“Southern Gothic at its finest, this is Katie McGarry’s best book to date!” ―Miranda Kenneally, author of Catching Jordan and Breathe, Annie, Breathe

Bestselling author Katie McGarry’s trademark wrong-side-of-the-tracks romance is given a new twist in the gritty YA contemporary novel, Only a Breath Apart.

Jesse Lachlin is cursed.

So the town folklore says, but while Jesse’s had his fair share of tragedy, the only curse he believes is in his grandmother’s will: in order to inherit his family farm he must win the approval of his childhood best friend, the girl he froze out his freshman year, Scarlett Copeland.

Scarlett Copeland is psychic.

Glory Gardner tells Scarlett she has hidden psychic abilities, but Scarlett thinks Glory is delusional. What is real is Scarlett’s father’s irrational fears, controlling attitude, and the dark secrets at home. Scarlett may have a way to escape, but there’s a hitch: she’ll have to rely on the one person she used to trust, the same boy who broke her heart, Jesse Lachlin.

Each midnight meeting pushes Jesse and Scarlett to confront their secrets and their feelings for each other. But as love blooms, the curse rears its ugly head…

My Review:
I absolutely loved this book, it was amazing. I’m totally not biased since I loooove all of Katie’s books but this one was really awesome. I really enjoyed Scarlett’s character!! She was so cool and the aspect of curses in this story was equally cool. Scarlett’s home life though really stuck with me, especially when she describes how she feels like she’s drowning with no help. Very poignant.

Where Have I Been?

I’m such a bad blogger I swear. These past few months have been kind of rough for me with college, my own health, and my brothers health.

I’ve been focusing more on my Instagram (@a_bookish_dream) and growing my following there. I recently hit 1k followers which is pretty amazing!!

I’m going to try my best to get back into blogging about books I’m reading. That’ll be fun right? Expect a review for If There’s No Tomorrow by Jennifer L. Armentrout very soon!

I mentioned my brother… Back in April we found out he had Stage 4 Lymphoma, since then he has been getting chemotherapy. He’s improving! There have been a lot of struggles but he’s still hanging in there which is wonderful! He’s such a strong kid.

I’ve also been kinda focused on my boyfriend… It’s still a little weird saying that! Back in November I started dating this AMAZING guy who lives in South Carolina. He appreciates my love of books and really loves Alice in Wonderland 😉

On the school front I’m going to be going into my last semester of my associates program. Which means I’m starting to look at Creative Writing programs to transfer into. AAHH scary!! Not really, but it’s kinda weird to think about.

Thanks for sticking with me all these months even though I’ve been MIA! What is everyone currently reading? Let me know!

*exhales* Beautiful perfection

Ivy Morgan hasn’t been feeling like herself lately. Not like anyone can blame her. After all, being held captive by a psychotic fae prince hell-bent on permanently opening the gates to the Otherworld is bound to leave some mental scars.

It’s more than that, though. Something dark and insidious is spreading throughout Ivy, more powerful than she could ever imagine… and it’s coming between her and the man she’s fallen deeply in love with, elite Order member Ren Owens.

Ren would do anything to keep Ivy safe. Anything. But when he makes a life altering choice for her, the fallout of his act has far reaching consequences that threaten to tear their lives apart.

If Ivy is going to have any hope of surviving this, she must put aside the hurt and betrayal she feels, and work with not only those she loves, but with an enemy she would rather kill than ever trust. War is coming, and it soon becomes clear that what Ivy and Ren thought they knew about the Order, themselves, and even their enemies, has been nothing but a cluster of dangerous, deadly lies. Ivy knows she must be more than just brave to save those she loves–and, ultimately, to save herself.

Because behind ever evil fae Prince, there’s a Queen

Bookstagram on a Budget

Bookstagram is an amazing community that I have been a part of for these last few months. It is welcoming, beautiful, and has great people.

If you’re first starting out or looking to revamp your feed this is the post for you!

Are you like me and don’t have a lot of money to spend on props, candles, bookmarks, professional lights, etc? No problem, here’s what I’ve found these last few months that I’ve found helpful.

First off let’s talk about getting props for your photos. I tend to look around my house for things I already own that fit the book and look I’m going for. Just today I was doing a shoot for the book Perfected IMG_4166.JPG

Pretty right? All of that was stuff I had lying around.

  1. The white rose and purple flowers: I had gotten the rose from one of the craft stores years (upon years) ago and I’ve been using it in pictures more and more recently. The purple flowers I had gotten in a bundle from my local Dollar Tree when I first got my car, this happened to fall off recently so I saved it to use for photos
  2. The makeup, necklace, and perfume: These are other things that I’ve had for years and thought fit the theme and look I was going for. The choker was gifted to me by my friend Nikki *waves* a few months ago
  3. White heart case: This was a gift that I got when I was 7 years old from one of my aunts, another thing I just had lying around
  4. Crystal flower: This is a replica of the lotus flower from Sailor Moon (an anime/manga) that I got about 4 years ago
  5. The fairy lights: It’s Halloween time so I found these fairy wire lights (and other lights) at my local Dollar Tree!! Beautiful lights for only $1! A steal honestly
  6. The black backdrop: My bed sheet, no joke

So you see things like these can easily be found around your home. If you want of course you could go out and buy these things for photos if you don’t have them already.

Also today I did a shoot for Till Death by Jennifer L. Armentrout, I used an old fake engagement ring that I had gotten as a little kid (don’t ask lol), the Dollar Tree fairy lights, and a bunch of fake red flower petals that I re-purposed from two old flowers I’ve had for years. IMG_4170

Doesn’t that look super pretty? I love it! And I didn’t have to go out and buy a thing. If I was to put a price tag on this post I would say I ‘spent’ $18 on this whole shoot (including the price for the book) without the price of the book I ‘spent’ $8 on this shoot.

Basically what I’m saying is to check out your local dollar stores, thrift stores, friends house, your own house, etc. to find things to use for your Bookstagram account. Anyone can have beautiful photos on a budget!
