Review: Ash Princess by Laura Sebastian *Spoilers*

Theodosia was six when her country was invaded and her mother, the Fire Queen, was murdered before her eyes. On that day, the Kaiser took Theodosia’s family, her land, and her name. Theo was crowned Ash Princess–a title of shame to bear in her new life as a prisoner.

For ten years Theo has been a captive in her own palace. She’s endured the relentless abuse and ridicule of the Kaiser and his court. She is powerless, surviving in her new world only by burying the girl she was deep inside.

Then, one night, the Kaiser forces her to do the unthinkable. With blood on her hands and all hope of reclaiming her throne lost, she realizes that surviving is no longer enough. But she does have a weapon: her mind is sharper than any sword. And power isn’t always won on the battlefield.

For ten years, the Ash Princess has seen her land pillaged and her people enslaved. That all ends here.

My Review:

OK so I have a mini-gripe. The author herself said in a talk that this was very much GOT inspired… But I honestly cannot see it. I was sold on the concept regardless but don’t tell me it’s GOT when it’s not 😂

“Where the hell is the GOT inspo?”

Other than that!! Solid 4/5 ⭐️

The relationship between Theo and the Prinz honestly felt super forced. They sent back like 2 or 3 letters to each other and BAM they’re in love 😒 Other than that I dunno she seemed like a cool character but this didn’t live up to the hype for me.

Review: Wintersong by S. Jae-Jones *spoilers*

Dark, romantic, and unforgettable, Wintersong is an enchanting coming-of-age story for fans of Labyrinth and Beauty and the Beast.

The last night of the year. Now the days of winter begin and the Goblin King rides abroad, searching for his bride…

All her life, Liesl has heard tales of the beautiful, dangerous Goblin King. They’ve enraptured her mind, her spirit, and inspired her musical compositions. Now eighteen and helping to run her family’s inn, Liesl can’t help but feel that her musical dreams and childhood fantasies are slipping away.

But when her own sister is taken by the Goblin King, Liesl has no choice but to journey to the Underground to save her. Drawn to the strange, captivating world she finds―and the mysterious man who rules it―she soon faces an impossible decision. And with time and the old laws working against her, Liesl must discover who she truly is before her fate is sealed.

Rich with music and magic, S. Jae-Jones’s Wintersong will sweep you away into a world you won’t soon forget.

My Review:

I honestly really enjoyed this book!! Liesl was a really strong character who would give anything for her family. And this version of the Goblin King was honestly mesmerizing.

Solid 5/5 ⭐️

Now onto the spoilers! If you don’t want some spoilers then turn away now.

This honestly took the OG Labrynth movie and turned it on its head! But in a totally good way. I really loved this book. Liesl not only sacrificed herself for her family and sister BUT she sacrificed her love for the Goblin King in the end to return home so she wouldn’t die. I honestly really can’t wait to read the next book.

Review: The Merciless IV Last Rites by Danielle Vega *spoiler free*

And thus the SPOOPY begins. OK so this will be both a review and also a talk of this authors Instagram practices because honestly you can’t not discuss it…

Brooklyn Stevens sits in a pool of her own blood, tied up and gagged. No one outside of these dank basement walls knows she’s here. No one can hear her scream.
Sofia Flores knows she shouldn’t have gotten involved. When she befriended Riley, Grace, and Alexis on her first day at school, she admired them, with their perfect hair and their good-girl ways. They said they wanted to save Brooklyn. They wanted to help her. Sofia didn’t realize they believed Brooklyn was possessed.
Now, Riley and the girls are performing an exorcism on Brooklyn—but their idea of an exorcism is closer to torture than salvation. All Sofia wants is to get out of this house. But there is no way out. Sofia can’t go against the other girls…unless she wants to be next.
By the shockingly twisted end, readers will be faced with the most haunting question of all: Is there evil in all of us?

My Review:

This was a really nice end to this series but I kinda wanted more specifically on the demon that has been present throughout this whole series! 4/5 ⭐️

Now lets talk about the author… I’ve been on Bookstagram for about a year and a half now… I’ve posted photos of this authors books and raved about them… Tagged the author… The author, Danielle Vega, has followed and unfollowed me 10 times… Two of those were around the release of this book and the third book in this series. I did speak to other Bookstagrammers who experienced this same thing so she definitely is a serial unfollower 🤷🏻‍♀️ I honestly think that’s shitty and it’s stopped me from recommending her books because when you recommend someone’s books it’s also kinda understood that you’re recommending that person too.

Anyway that’s my two cents but if you do like demon possession stories this is one to keep an eye on.

Review: Renegades by Marissa Meyer *SPOILERS*

This will have a few gripings in it so be warned.

Secret Identities.
Extraordinary Powers.
She wants vengeance. He wants justice.

The Renegades are a syndicate of prodigies―humans with extraordinary abilities―who emerged from the ruins of a crumbled society and established peace and order where chaos reigned. As champions of justice, they remain a symbol of hope and courage to everyone…except the villains they once overthrew.

Nova has a reason to hate the Renegades, and she is on a mission for vengeance. As she gets closer to her target, she meets Adrian, a Renegade boy who believes in justice―and in Nova. But Nova’s allegiance is to the villains who have the power to end them both.

My Review:

4/5 ⭐️ for this one. I liked the overall story but there were parts, specifically characters and powers, that were directly lifted from the X-MEN comics.

Spoilery Gripe below…

Ok so yeah a lot of the characters were directly lifted from X-Men comics. Now I get it that there are only soooo many powers BUT… It was to the point that one character was a direct lift of Rogue… Like a direct lift. Basically if you’re a huge fan of X-Men then maybe stay away from this one because I was soooo pissed that I could barely finish the book…

Janesville, Wisconsin (cold in the sense that there is no God)

The worst thing that’s ever happened to Craig is also the best: Amy. Amy and Craig never should’ve gotten together. Craig is an awkward, Dungeons & Dragons-playing geek, and Amy is the beautiful, fiercely intelligent student-body president of their high school.

Yet somehow they did. Until Amy dumped him. Then got back together with him. Then dumped him again. Then got back together with him again. Over and over and over.
Unfolding during their senior year, Amy and Craig’s exhilarating, tumultuous relationship is a kaleidoscope of joy, pain, and laughter as an uncertain future-and adult responsibility-loom on the horizon.
Craig fights for his dream of escaping Janesville and finding his place at a quirky college, while Amy’s quest to uncover her true self sometimes involves being Craig’s girlfriend and sometimes doesn’t.

Seven heartbreaks. Seven joys. Told nonsequentially, acclaimed playwright Don Zolidis’s debut novel is a brutally funny, bittersweet taste of the utterly unique and utterly universal experience of first love.

My Review:

I absolutely loved Craig as a character. He definitely vibed with me a lot especially through his trials with Amy. I really enjoyed this story, it was a 4/5 star read for me! What if you were the missing piece in one of the world’s most epic legends?
Despite being an art history student, Summer isn’t thrilled to be stuck with her archeologist family all summer in Greece. While the rest of her college friends are posting a million selfies by the pool together, Summer is stuck alone, trying to entertain herself alone in a place where she doesn’t even speak the language.

Upon her arrival to Greece, strange dreams and even stranger shadows seem to haunt Summer, leaving her to ponder the meaning of pomegranate seeds and twisted, darkened faces.

Suddenly, her stay abroad leads to tragic twists, leaving Summer in the arms of a dark stranger, who claims to be the god, Hades, whom she feels like she knows from another life. In a whirlwind through the busy streets of Athens, Summer is seduced to the lowest point of Greece where Hades’ lair awaits…the Underworld. Determined to find out who she is and where she belongs in an age-old myth, Summer joins Hades to discover that the secrets about her past life are beyond anything she could have ever imagined.

My Review:

I really enjoyed this book, solid 4/5 ⭐️! I loooove Hades and Persephone retellings so much and highly recommend this one! Great characters and a great story. Well fleshed out! I really appreciated Summer as a character.

Review: This is Kind of an Epic Love Story by Kheryn Callender *SPOILERS*

This book… I honestly wish I could forget all about it so I can read it again! It’s so good! Definitely for fans of Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera!

I received this book from the publisher in exchange for a review.

A fresh, charming rom-com perfect for fans of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda and Boy Meets Boy about Nathan Bird, who has sworn off happy endings but is sorely tested when his former best friend, Ollie, moves back to town.

Nathan Bird doesn’t believe in happy endings. Although he’s the ultimate film buff and an aspiring screenwriter, Nate’s seen the demise of too many relationships to believe that happy endings exist in real life.

Playing it safe to avoid a broken heart has been his MO ever since his father died and left his mom to unravel—but this strategy is not without fault. His best-friend-turned-girlfriend-turned-best-friend-again, Florence, is set on making sure Nate finds someone else. And in a twist that is rom-com-worthy, someone does come along: Oliver James Hernández, his childhood best friend.

After a painful mix-up when they were little, Nate finally has the chance to tell Ollie the truth about his feelings. But can Nate find the courage to pursue his own happily ever after?

This book releases October 30th

My Review:

I honestly can’t gush about this book enough. 5/5 ⭐️ My only issue with it was his best friend/ex-girlfriend Flo was really annoying… There were petty things that she did that I honestly didn’t like like forcing her new girlfriend on Nathan. This book has POC Queer Rep, Hard of Hearing and Sign Language rep, just… AAAHH I love it. I seriously love this book.

Jumping into spoilers in 3… 2… 1…

Ok so this book was fantastic. Even though it is short it still had so much emotion in it!!! Oliver and Nat are my new OTP and aaahh I want a second book so badly. So Flo is kinda eh… Like really eh I don’t like her at all. I didn’t feel sympathy for her that her girlfriend broke up with her or anything. And speaking of the girlfriend, I hate her too. She’s really mean! Yikes… But regardless of that I LOVED this book.
